The Blood Of Jesus – The Foundation Of The New Covenant

Prior to the death of Jesus Christ, the Mosaic Covenant was in effect upon all Israel.  It is commonly referred to as “the law.” It was a conditional covenant and based on man’s works.

Under this covenant, sin was not “taken away.”  Animal blood sacrifices were made unto God and presented for His approval by Israel’s Levitical High Priest annually on a special day (Day of Atonement).  These sacrificial offerings were designed to “cover” the sins of the people, and were to continue until the Messiah came to take away sin.

Jesus tells us that His death will be the beginning of a new covenant…

“ For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.” Matthew 26:28 KJV

The three things to note in Jesus’ statement are these:

1. The new testament (covenant) is a blood covenant

A proper blood covenant was necessary to satisfy God.  Animal sacrifices were inadequate.⁴

1. His blood is shed (poured out) for many.

This new covenant would be for all men (not only Israel).

1. His blood is for the remission (forgiveness) of sin.

Because His blood would satisfy God totally, sins could now be forgiven; taken away.

It is easy to see here the contrast between the old covenant and the new.  Primarily, the old covenant was based on works and sin was not forgiven, merely covered.  The new covenant does not have its foundation in man’s works (efforts), but in the blood of Christ, through which sin is unconditionally forgiven.

The Old Covenant had the Levitical Priesthood.

The New Covenant has Jesus as the High Priest, and we as the royal and Holy Priesthood. 1 Pet. 2:1-10.

The first priesthood had a temple in which God dwelt in the Holy of Holies with the Ark of the Covenant. Ex. 40.

In the New Covenant our bodies are the temple of God, and the Spirit dwells within them.

Jehovah was the Surety of the Old Covenant.

Heb. 7:22 “By so much also hath Jesus become the Surety of a better covenant.”

Jesus stands back of every sentence in the New Covenant. Are you excited yet?

He is the great Intercessor of the New Covenant. “He is able to save all that come unto God by Him, seeing He ever liveth to make intercession for them.” Heb. 7:24.

God bound Himself with an oath to the Old Covenant. He was the surety of the Old Covenant. He said, “By Myself have I sworn.”

Just as God stood behind the Old Covenant and was its surety, so Jesus is the Surety of every Word in the New.

What strong faith should be built upon a foundation like this.

The resources of Heaven are back of Jesus and back of that Covenant.

And Aaron shall make an atonement upon the horns of it once in a year with the blood of the sin offering of atonements: once in the year shall he make atonement upon it throughout your generations: it is most holy unto the LORD. Exodus 30:10

Atonement – means to cover over; pacify

The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.  John 1:29

But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year. For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins. Hebrews 10:3-4

And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission. Hebrews 9:223

In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins Colossians 1:14
